The Life in the Spirit Seminar is a process which was designed as an evangelistic tool, a formation experience, and an introduction to a life lived in the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. It was developed and has evolved over the course of some thirty plus years of evangelistic ministry, within Catholic Charismatic Renewal (e.g. see The Life in the Spirit Seminars, Team Manual, Catholic Edition 2000, revised by Theresa Boucher, Chariscenter USA, Box 628, Locust Grove, VA 22508). It was designed as a tool to reach a wide range of people and has been used primarily to bring church members to a fuller experience of life in the Spirit and to redefine the baptismal life that we are given in Christ Jesus, but often need to ratify as adult believers.

The seminar helps participants realize the fire, the breath, the gifts (wisdom , understanding, knowledge, piety, fear of the Lord-Isaiahan gifts) fruits (peace, love, joy, etc.) and the charisms (prophecy, healing, tongues, etc.) of the Spirit. Although we receive the life of the Spirit through the Sacraments of Initiation-Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, many of us need to fan this spark of life into flames. The seminar invites us to gather and prepare for a very personal "Pentecost", a new release or revitalization of the Spirit's Presence. It offers the opportunity to live our baptismal promises in the fullness of the Spirit."

The Life in the Spirit Seminar primarily serves to establish or deepen the relationship between the participants and Jesus Christ and to lead them to experience an awakening of the Sacramental power of Baptism and Confirmation. The seminar is most effective when approached with a personal posture of faith, expectancy and openness.

Holy Scriptures permeate the seminar presentations. Other important elements in the Cleveland Diocese seminar ideally include Morning and Evening Prayer, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a Healing Service, Celebration of the Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, and individual prayer. FTF has been led by the Spirit to endorse the sacramental approach and prayer and fasting prior to the seminar are integral to its success.

The Life in the Spirit seminar is an ideal vehicle for a week-long parish mission during the Advent, Lent, and Easter liturgical seasons. However, other time frames such as one night a week for four to six weeks, or a Thursday, Friday and all day Saturday seminar can be arranged. It is the experience of the Fanning the Flame committee of Catholic Renewal Ministries, however, that the time schedules of many Catholic parishioners are such that a Friday and all day Saturday seminar often proves to be the most desirable.

In the Cleveland Diocese, the Life in the Spirit seminars (LSS) are typically hosted by parishes. The parish LSS is put on either by the parish prayer group, or by the parish prayer group in tandem with the LSS Team or by the Fanning the Flame Team. Pastor approval is required and the FTF team coordinates each seminar together with the individual parish representatives in an effort to provide a rich, faith-filled experience for everyone involved in the seminar.
